In addition to produce, don’t forget to pick up eggs and a bouquet from the fridge!

This week at the farm we are wrapping up seeding and getting produce into the ground. The green house is full of less cold hearty seedlings waiting to be transplanted into the field as frosts and surprise snow storms become more infrequent. Spring also means preparing the bee hives for summer. There are currently two hives on the farm that we peeked into this week. The queens in both hives are alive and actively laying eggs! There are already four full frames of honey. A fun bee fact: if the had queen died or if the hive was unhappy with their queen, they would build a distinctive structure called a “superseder cell.” The superseder cell is filled with nectar and is used to raise a new queen. Luckily both our hive kingdoms are content with their queens. The farm also just got new bee boxes with built in windows. Once they are inhabited, we will be able to look inside the hives to watch the bee activity.

Meet the fan favorite runt of the lambing season!

In your boxes this week you will find fresh greens, herbs, root veggies and the first broccoli of the year. Hakurei turnips are a versatile ingredient in multiple meals. Unlike many variety of turnips, Hakurei do not need to be cooked. They are delicious raw, thinly sliced and added to salads for a nice crush and bite. When cooked, hakurei become much sweeter and can be a nice addition to stir fries.

Also this week you will receive Broccoli rabe, the leggy cousin of traditional broccoli. With smaller flowering heads and long, edible stalks and leaves, the whole plant is tasty and tender when cooked. Here is a recipe for sautéed broccoli rabe to add green side dish to your meal.
