Featured Farmer!
My name is Jake Stryker, and I am currently in my fourth season here at GVB. I’ve done a little bit of everything here on the farm, from killing chickens to being the musician at farm events. I am currently the substitute animal manager, substitute irrigator, and the head of the human resources department. When I’m not breaking things on the farm, a typical day for me involves feeding animals, moving sheep, and plugging in to the harvest at GVB.
Things are starting to heat up here on the farm, which means water is becoming more crucial everyday for our plant, animal and human friends. Irrigation Lead Clark Kerner is working around the clock moving handline irrigation pipe to provide vegetables with much needed irrigation. Adequate shade is becoming an important part in finding the next location for sheep herds. It is not uncommon during this time of year to see farmers enjoying their lunch by Rocky Creek, using their break to cool off in the swimming hole. As days are getting hotter, they are also getting longer, as our CSA is in full swing, restaurants are catering to tourists, and children roam the farm accompanied by camp counselors. U-Pick Strawberry and flower season is also currently under way, and our team is often joined by people harvesting their own fruit and flowers. It is around this time of the year when the farm really finds its flow, running as smoothly as the diesel engines of the tractors that plow the fields.
This weeks CSA includes carrots, garlic scapes, peas, and broccolini, which can be combined to make a very tasty and nutritious stir fry. Add in some farm fresh chicken (available at the Rocky Creek Farm Stand), and you have yourself a delicious meal that you can feed to your friends and family!
