Hello all! My name is Monica. I work as the Greenhouse and Field Manager at Rocky Creek Farm. I was born and raised in Ogden, Utah where my love for outdoor recreation and environmental education was fostered. I currently spend my free time snowboarding, biking, and camping with my beloved pup, Louis, my partner, Sven, and our little ol’ van, Norman. My work and educational background are in botany, chemistry, and natural resource management. I have absolutely loved being involved with Rocky Creek Farm and learning the ins and outs of community agriculture.
At the farm, we are currently managing this wild June freeze! This involves row covering our crops in their toasty “blankets.” We also manage freeze by watering our plants right before the temperatures drop. Freezing destroys the cells of plants. With watering, we can enlarge the cells, preventing degradation and damage.
Lots of plants have been going into the ground! Seedlings and starts planted in our fields this week include, corn, beans, squash, and the majority of our flowers for the season! We plant in the field using our water wheel transplanter. This transplanter works by spinning a wheel with teeth to create holes for plants. Water drips from a water tank, through the wheel, and into the holes where the plants will go. Farmers sit on attached seats connected to the back of the transplanter where they drop and cover plants in their new home.
This week in our CSA box, we have some yummy broccolini. I have been loving adding broccolini to my morning breakfast scramble. I love to simply cook down potatoes and broccolini with oil, salt, and pepper to taste. Add in some farm fresh eggs to complete a delicious and nutritious breakfast!
Please say hi if you see me around the farm! I would love to answer any question you may have about field and/or greenhouse operations. I am so excited to continue to learn and be a part of this community. Cheers!
