Fall is in the air here on the farm, we have been having a few pretty cool nights! I love these days! We are mostly just harvesting away around here! We have the biggest bean crop we have ever had, and we can’t keep up with picking them, so we are offering our CSA members to pick beans this week Wed, Thurs, Fri anytime between 7am-5pm at the GVB side of the farm. Take home half of what you pick and leave half for us. It could be a win for everyone- Dilly beans all winter for you and we don’t stress our crew out with the never ending bean crop!! We have both Dragon and Green Beans that you can pick. If you are interested just send Matt a text at 406-599-2360 and let him know what time you would like to show up.
Also we can use help in the fall vegetable harvest and on the Rocky Creek Side with Cider pressing and pumpkin patch. So if you know any one who wants a little farm work for the next two months- send them our way!
We are getting into some great produce this week. I love a well grown Napa Cabbage head and these are beauties. I was worried the hot weather would have them bolting before they made nice heads. Napa Cabbage is such a great versatile cabbage. It is tender and I make quick fresh salads with them, often chopping Napa, carrot, scallions, cilantro, mint and basil and tossing it with a rice vinegar based dressing and topping with peanuts or almonds. But it is also holds up to cooking, like these: 17 Napa Recipes. Half shares also got a tasty cabbage this week, they received the Caraflex cabbage, it packs it all into a small cone shape. These short season cabbage are also sweet and versatile.
I have grown the Sprouting Cauliflower for a few seasons now but only in small amounts and mostly sent to Blackbird Kitchen. This is one of the first years I have had enough for CSA and we still were a little short, some of you received broccoli instead of the cauliflower. This particular variety is called Song, and everyone who sees it calls it an alien vegetable. Roast it using your favorite cauliflower dish.
Enjoy these last days of summer,
Jacy
