Our farmer Audrey has the message for you this week:
On a typical year, I am a student at MSU. I Major in Sustainable Food and Bioenergy Systems and minor in Native American studies. This year, however, I have taken a deferral and am now getting some hands on experience in what I love. I have worked on a number of different farms, and I am excited to learn more from the diversity here at Rocky Creek Farm! Coming from New Mexico I am more than nostalgic to see the changing of the seasons present in the flavors of this weeks CSA. The corn and jalapeño have me recounting the sage, blue corn, and green chili of my past. In the past decade, I have lived all over the West, settling most comfortably in Montana and New Mexico. I have found that the culture, sense of humor, history, and style of the desert have shaped my character. I am, rather dry.
I am a newer member on the team here at GVB, and it has been incredibly fun so far. The staff is great and I have learned so much already from the diversity of things we grow and harvest. I am truly grateful to have an opportunity to work at such a communal and kind farm.
I love a good duality, and i have chosen a sweet and spicy recipe for this week. I have chosen my go to for any hardy veggies that you don’t know what to do with. It’s a grilling recipe but if you don’t have a grill, you can roast those veggies at 400 for 40 minutes. if you do roast them, I like to do a simple coat of olive oil, cumin, salt, and pepper.
Here's the recipe from NY Times, I couldn’t link it since I subscribe from my phone; but screenshots should suffice.
Wow this cold front had us scrambling around to try and harvest the produce that’s not so cold hardy. We are all enjoying the change of seasons with wants of jumping in leaves, crisp mornings and apple cider.
Until next week,
Alley & Audrey
