A message from our fantastic farmhand, Natalie, born and raised in Bozeman:
The cornsilk on the corn is turning from a light blond to dark brown; the French Heritage tomatoes are plump and ready for slicing; the apples in the orchard are barely beginning to fall off the trees; the Aronia berries are ripening into a deep purple blue —we know autumn is coming by the way the vegetables and fruits swell and droop under the hot sun. Even the sun itself, a deep red through the smoke, looks like it might fall out of the sky at any minute. We feel in our bodies the urgency of harvesting things while they’re ripe, and the lethargy of one season turning slowly into another.
This last week, the heat has seemed to run bone deep, and the smoke throughout the valley makes the air feel denser in the produce fields. It is an immediate, all-consuming reminder of why we are doing what we do: to grow food in a way that responds to the needs of the land, to build a future that helps us all thrive even in the midst of climate-related chaos.
I am grateful most of all to Matt and Jacy for sharing this abundant little patch of earth, and for time well-spent with a group of hardworking, thoughtful, and absolutely hilarious people. We hope you will savor the produce this week! It is a colorful expression of summer-turning-to-fall on the farm.
The Dragon Beans are my August favorite: they have fuchsia flowers that look especially bright under a hazy sky.
One final tip: if you visit the farm stand, you might be able to smell the fresh apples growing in the orchard—but only if you tilt your nose at just the right angle at just the right time. You might have to come visit the orchard yourself!
With a whistle and a whoop, Natalie
I recommend making a Caprese salad for you half sharers out there. Fresh tomatoes only last so long! For the full shares this week, Mexican Street Corn! https://www.delish.com/cooking/recipe-ideas/recipes/a47269/mexican-street-corn-elote-recipe/ Maybe pair with a fresh salsa with heritage tomatoes? YUM!
As Fall approaches, a nice reminder that we will have pumpkins, cider and all the fall festivity’s this year with reservations due to COVID.
Cheers,
Alley
