REMINDER: This is the last week for Summer CSA! Thank you all so much for a wonderful season :) If you are a Whole Farm CSA member, you will keep getting produce through the month of October, but we will be boxing it all up for you to come and pick up, as our market stand will be bustling with Fall Festival activities!
Want to continue with the greens, root crops, and winter squash and more Winter Produce: Join our Winter CSA that starts in November. Double your Winter farm fun and purchase our Nordic Ski Trails pass that just went on sale!
In a farming season as short as ours in Montana, we heavily rely on storage crops during the long winter months to fuel our families. Hearty stews and spiced roasted root vegetables grace our tables as the days get shorter and colder. But, the fall season is also the season of whimsical home decorations, and unfortunately fresh, local flowers come to an end around the same time, too.
One of the sombering things we see on the farm is when the first frosts take our tender flowers in the field. Luckily, we spend many hours during the summer finding ways to preserve our flowers for the winter months by drying them in the attic of the market stand barn. This year, we have really outdone ourselves and the attic is bursting with color and texture. We make colorful holiday wreaths and dried bouquets to sell at our market stand, but we also have plenty of flowers to sell in bunches for you to play around with at home.
We have been following the work of Hanna Muller for the past few years as she creates with dried flowers and have been over the moon that she published her first book, “Designing with Flowers.” This book contains recipes for the wildest dried flower creations to make at home. From different wreath making techniques, to dried flower clouds, and orange marigold garlands hanging from the ceiling, there are dozens of everlasting flower projects to explore.
For all you flower CSA subscribers, we have dried flower arrangements for you this week. If you feel inspired, come check out our vast collection of dried flowers to get creative at home with your family and friends!
In both CSA shares this week, you will find coriander seeds! Coriander seeds are the seeds of the cilantro plant that are also widely used in Latin American and Indian cooking. Keep them in your pantry and pound in a mortar and pestle before using. Or plant them in your garden next spring!
