August 6- Whole Farm/Summer CSA

Another week on the farm! The flower field is looking absolutely superb, there are so many different varieties to choose from. Come in for you-pick flowers and see if there is any you-pick raspberries. This weeks CSA box is full of some summer favorites! We are particularly excited about the artichokes. Did you know artichokes are the unbloombed flower of the sunflower family. They also have the highest antioxidants of any vegetable.

Featured Farmer

Hey everybody! My is John Kennedy and I’m one of the new farmhands working with the team this year. Though originally from California, I have spent a good chunk of my adult life outside of the Golden State. I’ve lived in Spain where I developed my love and joy for playing and writing music. Eventually moving to Chicago where I study music at Columbia College Chicago. The past few years I’ve been very migratory, WWOOFing (Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms) around the USA for about a year, working on an educational farm on Shelter Island, NY, and now working here in the beautiful state of Montana.

On the farm I have a few hats I have been given the opportunity to wear. I run the Pack Shed on Wednesdays, do deliveries on Thursdays, and work with the rest of the field crew for the rest of the days. Working out in the field is always a nice way to spend the day. We swap stories, tell jokes, and come up with new silly questions to get to know each other better.

It’s a fun puzzle organizing everything in the Pack Shed for deliveries and for CSA packing. Each week is a little different and new challenges arise. I’m always reminded of how wonderful this group of people are and how grateful I am for them when working these days. Even after a long day of work in the field each of them is willing to help do the final cleanup and finishing touches of packing that still needs to get done. They are usually positive and happy to pitch in. Another great aspect of the Pack Shed days is the packing of the CSA boxes. Seeing the bounty of what is going into each box every week and dreaming up little dishes to share with family and friends. This week I was transported to my childhood, when I saw that artichoke was going to be included. I have many fond memories of my Mom and her friend roasting up some artichokes with some lemon, herbs, garlic, and of course melted butter for dipping the artichoke petals into. She always seemed to save at least one of the coveted hearts for me. I hope you’re able to share a meal and memory with someone you care about too. Maybe even give them the last heart to show how special they are to you.

Thank you so much for the continued support and love, we really appreciate it. Also, if you are interested in learning about what we do or just simply want to help out, we are looking for volunteers to join the crew on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We’d love to have you! If you bring your swimming gear, we’ll even show you the best place to take a dip in Bozeman.
