Featured Farmer:

Hello, lovely CSA members and friends of the farm! My name is Ellie and this is my first season at the farm. Although I grew up exploring the plains of Iowa, I’ve been traveling all over the country for the last five years, trying to find the most fun work in the coolest places I can. I’ve lived in Seattle, New Orleans, Minneapolis, Southwest Utah, Birmingham, Alabama, and more! I’ve worked on farms, as a backpacking guide, even as a traveling construction crew member for a “glamping” company. But there’s nothing I love more than farming. It’s the best combination of fun, rewarding, hard, dynamic work that I’ve experienced.

I’ve been living and working on the farm since May and have appreciated every second! I get to play a lot of different roles here, and I love how different the work is day-to-day. If you stop by to pick up your CSA box on Tuesday afternoons, or if you swing by the market on Thursdays, you’ve probably seen me behind the counter snuggling my our sweet farm cat, Teddy. I love getting to interact with the public and meet our CSA members at the market. I help to sort and display all our veggies, box up the eggs, and ring up customers.

I also help out with the flower harvest, hand-picking the best stems and lovingly craft each bouquet that goes home with you! It’s really fun coming up with different ideas for bouquets and seeing them all come together. The possibilities are endless! My favorite task on the farm is doing the animal chores, which entails anything from collecting eggs, to herding the sheep to their next grazing spot, to giving lots of pets to our sheep dogs, Bella and Magda. I love spending my days outside, sticking my hands in the dirt, and working hard to give you all fresh, organic food and beautiful flowers. Thank you so much for supporting our farm! Know that there’s a whole lot of work and even more love that goes into whatever you get to bring home.

If you have summer squash growing in your garden at home, you know exactly what I mean when I say it is prolific! So if you need a quick, easy, and super delicious way to use it up, try making this fried summer squash recipe that I love to use:

1.) Cut your summer squash into coins, then sprinkle on some salt.

2.) While that sits for a minute, get out three different bowls putting cracked eggs, flour, and breadcrumbs in each respective bowl.

3.) Then, dip the squash coins into the flour first, then the egg, and finally the breadcrumbs.

4.) Lastly, simply place into a 400 degree air-fryer for about 10-15 minutes or until desired crispiness! I like to use mine in pasta, on top of a salad, in a veggie sandwich or wrap, or just as a snack!

(my tip is to add some salt and seasonings to the breadcrumbs bowl and give it a good mix to make these even more flavorful!)

Song Cauliflower Recipe

We also have been sautéing the Song Cauliflower almost every night! Sometimes just by itself, or sometimes with Dragon Beans or Carrots. Though they are nice, I can’t get bogged down with making matchsticks, just lengthwise half the carrot and thin lengthwise slices. Just a quick saute: Carrots first for a toss or three, add the song for another minute and then the beans. Remove from heat and cover for another minute or two. Salt & Pepper maybe.
