Hello farm friends!

We’re now steadily into August and, as is par for the course, just about drowning in produce — in a good way! The summer squash is prolific as ever, arugula is back, potatoes are coming on and we’ve been harvesting onions and garlic like nobody’s business. I’m very excited about this box — so many tasty combinations, you really can’t go wrong.

Notes:

- Raspberries are ready for u-pick! 10/lb Come to the farm during our market stand hours (Tuesdays 12-6pm, Thursday/Saturdays 8am-12pm) to pick yours. And while you’re here be sure to grab a bag of Organic Old and Ancient flour from Conservation Grains. A combination of spelt and kamut, it’s crafted specially to yield the best cakes, pies, crumbles, galettes… summer squash and basil galette and basil? Maybe! Just make sure to salt and drain the zucchinis a bit first to avoid a soggy crust.

- A reminder that though the market stand opens at noon on Tuesdays, CSA pickup starts at 2pm and goes until 6pm. We do this to limit the time that your produce is sitting out. Thank you!

Produce:

Kohlrabi: “In the brassica family, kohlrabi has an edible bulb that grows above the ground. The flavor is similar to broccoli stems or a sweeter, milder cabbage. After it's been peeled, it can be eaten raw, sliced thin in salads, or sautéed in butter with garlic. It can also be used in Southeast Asian recipes as a substitute for green papaya.” (Eating With the Seasons)

Red long of tropea: A summer onion with a flavor between scallion and red onions. Perfect for grilling, salads, or sandwiches.

Recipes:

This zucchini ricotta galette makes great use of your summer squash and basil!

Try an arugula and snap pea (great shelled, sliced, or whole) or fava bean salad as a lovely summer side dish. A simple lemon vinaigrette really brings out the sweetness of snap peas and lets peppery arugula shine.

I made the zucchini black bean quesadillas from last week’s newsletter and they did not disappoint! Very filling and incredibly easy to make. I also added some cumin, paprika and chili powder. Substitute your red long of tropea onions for the scallions and you’re good to go.

Now a few words from Alex!

Hey everyone! My name is Alex and I have been working as the harvest lead this season. With the heat of summer in full swing, it has been a busy last month. During the week, I get to enjoy working with a crew that has become like family. We enjoy Sunday meals together, going to live music, and recreating with the time we have outside of work. The highlight of this season for me has been the farm community. The teamwork and dedication each person puts into the farm is what makes this place so special and I cannot appreciate it enough. Everyone supports everyone and we all work together to make these CSA boxes happen. This CSA box was a blast to pick, and it's a great box to make shish kabobs with! The potatoes are so tender and would go great on a stick over the grill with the zucchini, kohlrabi, and red tropea onions. The beauty of the classic shish kabob is that each one can be unique, and you can experiment easily with your favorite seasoning combinations!

Reading this reminded me of this lamb and veg kebab recipe I saw last summer. Grab some lamb from the market stand and go crazy!

Wishing you all a pleasant week and a beautiful Full Sturgeon Moon on Thursday!
