Whole Farm CSA - Week of May 23rd
Hello!
Welcome to another big spring week of planting at the farm. This week the vegetable fields are welcoming potatoes, leeks, celery, celeriac, parsnips, Napa and caraflex cabbage, in addition to our weekly seeding and transplanting of greens and lettuce heads. We’re planting strawberries and just finished up with all of our sweetpeas (both of which will be available for u-pick when the time comes!), plus other small flowers including forget me nots, honey wort, and delightfully fragrant feverfew. As you can tell, we’ve been taking advantage of the dry days, but when the rain starts on Friday we will start planting our summer heirloom tomatoes in the mobile tunnel.
This week we’ve also been busy planting cover crops (peas, oats, and clovers) that will end up being ⅖ of our fields this year. This will ensure better soil health, weed control and water absorption down the line, leading to a healthier ecosystem and better yield overall - hooray!
The newest member of your CSA box this week is lovage. Lovage is an herb that resembles parsley in appearance but has more of a celery flavor, making it a great addition to stocks and soup. It also does really well in a chicken salad (or a mashed chickpea salad for a vegetarian alternative) or sliced thinly and added as a garnish. We also have a beautiful spring bouquet for you full of anemones, ranunculae, and daffodils.
If you haven’t tried roasting your hakurei turnips yet, do it! Try leaving an inch or two of greens on to get nice and crispy, dress with olive oil, salt and pepper and roast until tender and golden brown.
Try something new with your broccolini this week - these spicy lemon garlic or soy lime recipes look fantastic: Broccolini 3 Ways
And be sure to check out all of our new market stand offerings when you pick up your CSA!
