Seventh CSA - Week of July 21st

A quick hello from our animal guy, Jordan Atwood.

“I’m a senior at Montana State university majoring in Sustainable Food Systems. I’m from Michigan originally but I have lived in Bozeman for the past four years and Big Sky for three years prior to that. My passion for farming has come from cooking in restaurants throughout my life and a curiosity of what goes into producing quality local ingredients. I had a desire to move from the kitchen to the farm and learn as much as possible about this vital section of our food system which. This desire lead me to go back to school and begin working on farms.  Here at Gallatin Valley Botanical and Rocky Creek my job is to take care of all the animals on the farm. I start the day at 7am by feeding and watering all of our chicks, laying hens, broiler chickens, turkeys, pigs, and sheep as well as moving our mobile chicken coops to allow for fresh grazing daily. The rest of the day varies and may include wrangling runaway chickens, building new chicken coops or repairing existing coops, resupplying feed, helping in the fields, or moving sheep to a new pasture. My experience at GVB has been and continues to be an incredibly valuable learning experience and one of the best jobs I have ever had. I will be graduating MSU this fall and am planning on starting my own farm somewhere within the next few years supplying restaurants, markets, and CSA’s, and eventually opening a restaurant on my farm serving local seasonal food. “

A fun recipe to try out this week is Mint Tzatziki with Endive, Romaine, & Sugar Snaps! It includes most of the produce from this week.
