Notes from Jacy: Please, Please check your name at your drop off location. If you don’t see your name but you chose that location, give us a call or text, and we will ensure that we don’t make the same mistake again, and that it doesn’t happen again the next week! But if we don’t know, we can’t fix it and we continually end up shorting someone. Also, the pick-up spots are not interchangeable, we make you a box for your location once a week, if you take from another location or time, you are taking someone else’s box or flowers! We are still having a few problems, so please help us fix them! That is also true of Rocky Creek Farm, If your pick up is Tuesday, take a Tuesday box and your pickup time is Tuesday 2pm-Friday 8pm, If your pick up day is Saturday your pick up time is Saturday 8am-Monday 8pm. Thank you for your help in making sure everyone gets their veggies and flowers!
Also, I am part of a Cookbook Club here in Bozeman, and every other month, or so, we get together and cook the recipes out of a new cookbook. I love these ladies that I get together with and they are such amazing cooks. This month we did Dining In by Alison Roman. Here is a great Cucumber and Kohlrabi in Crunchy Chili Oil recipe from her:
2 cucumber, 1 medium Kohlrabi (peeled), 2 Tbls rice vinegar or fresh lime juice, Flaky sea salt, 3 -4 Tbls Crunchy Chili Oil
Using vegetable peeler or mandolin, thinly slice cucumbers lengthwise into very thin ribbons and place in a large bowl. Using a vegetable peeler, peel the kohlrabi, creating long thin strips, alternatively slicing into very thin rounds using a mandolin or sharp knife.
Place the kohlrabi in the bowl with the cucumbers, toss with the vinegar, and season with sea salt. Drizzle with Crunchy Chili Oil.
-Crunchy Chili Oil: (3/4 c peanut oil, 1/4 crushed red pepper, 1/4 cup sesame seeds ( white or black), 2-3 tbls sichuan peppercorns, 4 garlic cloves, Kosher salt
Thank you, enjoy your notes from Ophelia:
First things first, we are relieved to mention that the construction on the Frontage Road access to Rocky Creek has been temporarily paused due to the weather. Thank goodness because the Kelly Canyon access is now a big slip ‘n’ slide.
In other, more exciting news, we picked our first crop of peas on Monday, and our strawberry plants are producing their first fruits! We are anticipating you-pick strawberries sometime in July, so stay tuned for an update. Summer is finally here, which means things are getting busy. Camp started this week so the Farm is bustling with some awesome and inquisitive kiddos!
Now, let’s talk about toast. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from my good friend Ned it’s the magic of creative toast. We both share the same cooking style which is recipe-free and follow-your-nose. The combinations for great toast are endless, but the formula is generally the same--bread, sauce, something like chicken or a tomato, and something leafy. I like to start with a couple pieces of On The Rise sourdough, the amazing bread that goes with everything. Here’s a great recipe for garlic scape pesto that can be spread on top: https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1015301-garlic-scape-pesto Then just throw a fried egg on top, maybe some asparagus, some fresh spinach and whammo! If you’re feeling fancy, sprinkle some violas on top for edible decoration. Nasturtiums would add a nice spice as well.
Scapes included, this CSA is full of unique veggies. Kohlrabi is one that has always puzzled me. Is it an apple? Is it a kale? Is it an alien baby? The flavor of a kohlrabi is similar to that of broccoli stems, sweet but peppery. I called my mom to see what she would suggest and right away she advised grating it up along with some freshly chopped scallions for a super refreshing summer salsa. Kohlrabi can also be sliced into slivers and tossed into a salad. Let us know if you have some unique uses for kohlrabi! I personally would love to hear about them!
Thank you so much for reading and enjoy!
All the best and more,
Ophelia (farmhand)
