Out with the old and in with the new! Yep, that’s Matt tilling in the spinach.   Over the past couple of weeks we had been cutting it back more and more when harvesting, cutting whole plants instead of just the bigger leaves.  And even then it started to grow right back!  It has been quite the amazing spinach succession, but the time has come to switch gears and we will soon seed be seeding our first carrots of the year out there.  We’ve also taken a momentary break from microgreen production, and are focusing on getting everything else seeded on time.  But, more greens are in sight.  We were able to take advantage of some beautiful, beautiful, weather and get some seeds in the ground outside before the snow fell at the end of the week.  We started off with all our peas; sugar snap, sugar anne, and a few shelling varieties, and compared to last spring this was about a full month earlier.   We were also able to get fava beans and French gray shallots planted, as well as seed mustard greens, lettuce mix, and more spinach.  The ‘Little A’ tractor, the red one that appeared on the blog a few weeks ago, proved it’s worth already.  We were able to utilize it to drive down each row making furrows to secure in the row covers, instead of digging it all with hand tools.  The opportunities seem endless…

We have both a new friend and an old friend back on the farm now as well.  The new friend is Lamby, a little lamb from 13 mile farm.  He was born with Rye neck Syndrome, meaning his neck is a little twisted, but he has proven to be a real survivor and seems to really be enjoying farm life out here.  And the old friend is Katie, who has worked out here for the past two seasons and will be taking on the full immersion of being a live-on-farm intern this season.  So you will surely be working with her whenever you come out to visit and see her at the Bozeman farmer’s markets, and it’s
good to have her back.
